In a recent incident that has heightened concerns among residents, a sizable crocodile was spotted outside a home in Northeast Miami-Dade. The sighting occurred near Northeast 209th Street and 23rd Avenue, where the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding the unexpected visitor.
Homeowner Gil Kochavi recounted the discovery, noting that upon reviewing their surveillance footage, they observed a “very, very large crocodile right in the yard.” Interestingly, this wasn’t the first encounter; surveillance from a few weeks prior had captured what appeared to be the same crocodile on their property.
The neighborhood features a central lake, and residents have long been aware of the crocodiles inhabiting the area. However, the reptiles’ increasing proximity to homes has become a significant concern. Neighbor Clara Pilo expressed her apprehension, stating, “This is very dangerous to have this animal in our lake.” Another resident, Edward Brian, added, “It’s a little unnerving in the park. It’s very unnerving when they are walking down the street.”
While the crocodile eventually returned to the lake after resting near some bushes for a few hours, the incident underscores the delicate balance between human habitation and wildlife in Florida. As Kochavi remarked, “Generally speaking, if you don’t bother them, they don’t bother you, and it’s part of living in Florida.”
This event serves as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and respect the natural habitats of local wildlife, ensuring safety for both humans and animals.
